Bond with specific food
« on: February 26, 2020, 10:11:19 am »
Hi guys,

I was wondering if any of you have one specific food that they’re especially attached to?
I have this with one specific kind of Ben&jerry’s ice cream. I loved it even before my eating disorder started and I guess it means to me so much as well because I only eat it in a very specific setting ; when I’m on my own, watching a movie/tv show. Especially on evenings when I visit my family. It’s become almost a kind of ritual which I enjoy a lot and which makes me relax, although it’s against all good reason, since Ben&jerry’s is very expensive where I live and I actually can’t afford it, but I still buy it because nothing compares to it (I’ve tried other ice creams but they just can’t compete) and the price is worth it for me (although it does make me feel weird when I think about how much I must have spend on Ben&jerry’s in my life).
Do you guys have any experiences that are similar ? Or do you ever spend money on food you can’t actually afford ?

Hoping everyone is well,
Frances

Hey Frances!

Oh, absolutely. I think the best example I have is pie. When I was in seminary and super stressed out, there was a small grocery store near where student housing was, and they sold miniature pies. (Basically a fourth of a "regular" pie as one small pie.) And I absolutely fell in love . . . so I would have one every night before bed. I'd go to the store and basically buy them out of those mini-pies every week, haha . . . a leaning tower of pie making its way to the cash register! And . . . they weren't cheap, either. But they made me happy, so I got them.

And steak. I also went through a phase where I had to have steak every Sunday while watching my favorite American football team. ;) Steak and a massive baked potato with cheese. I actually once accidentally bought really expensive steak (because I couldn't read the price on the label, lol) and sort of got hooked on that during my steak-phase.

I don't think I have a food like that right now, but yes, it's happened to me before and I'm sure it'll happen again. (I guess another one is bacon? I mean, you can't ever go wrong with bacon!)

Out of curiosity, what flavor of Ben & Jerry's is it??

(Incidentally, Ben & Jerry's employees get something like 3 pints a day to take home . . . I'm jealous!)

Hi Frances! This is kind of a sweet thread!
Ever since I was really little my family had cinnamon rolls every Sunday morning. But we moved house when I was 9 and switched to these frozen chocolate croissants at Trader Joe’s. You take them out at night and let them defrost and puff up, and then in the morning you put them in the oven and have fresh chocolate croissants! No matter what, hell or high water, we got those croissants out. And we had some hectic stories surrounding that haha. Even when my restriction and orthorexia was at its worst, I still had a chocolate croissant every Sunday morning. It was an undeniable sacred right to myself. When I moved cross country to live with my big sister, we kept the tradition going got her fiancé in on it. They hold less value I think now that I know I can eat a chocolate croissant everyday of the week, but chocolate croissants on Sundays hold a special place in my heart.
Thanks for sharing your stories Frances and Dyl! They were fun to read :)
Best,
Bear

Oh, Bear, that's just lovely!! <3

Reminds me of my Dad and me, too. Every Saturday (or Sunday--it switched days a few times, but usually Saturday) he'd go and get us donuts. And every Friday night, just as I went to bed, he'd poke his head into my room and ask what kind I wanted. I don't get them often now, but there's something about a grocery-store donut that just gives me all kinds of warm fuzzies. (He also used to listen to jazz at the same time, when I was really little, but as I got older it was just the two of us sitting at the kitchen table, haha.)

Those chocolate croissants sound amazeballs, though!! Yum! <3

Hi Dyl and Bear!

Thanks for sharing your stories ! The pies and croissants sound delicious! In a way I think you fall in love with the habit connected to it..:)

My favourite Ben and Jerry’s ice cream has always been half baked, but recently when the store I was in had run out of it, I got topped salted caramel brownie , which I found very delicious has well.
3 pints per day for Ben and Jerry’s employees sound like heaven !
